Getting Textbooks to Zero Student Cost: ZTC and OER

Merced College Library guide with resources for lowering student textbook costs.

ZTC/OER Faculty Incentive Program

First created and launched by former MCCD faculty librarian Joey Merritt and current MCCD faculty librarian Lindsay Davis in Fall 2022, funds from the ZTC grant were used to finance the ZTC/OER Faculty Incentive Program again in late Spring and Summer 2025 with some modifications due to the grant parameters. The training in Canvas is comprised of five learning modules facilitated by faculty librarian Lindsay Davis.

Starting in Fall 2025, applicants will be able to choose between adopting OER/ZTC materials, adapting/curating OER, or creating their own OER text. For those creating new content, the new content must be licensed CC BY 4.0 and deposited into COOL4Ed, the state OER repository. While everyone who is selected for the program must first complete the training modules, the "final project" will be different depending on the project scope elected by the applicant (adoption, adaptation/curation, or authoring an original text). Previous participants will be able to apply for other projects without needing to complete the learning modules again, but there will be other activities to complete in order to support faculty projects.

  • Adoption: $1,000 stipend
  • Adaptation/curation: $2,000 stipend
  • Authoring an original OER: $5,000 stipend

For projects that may not neatly fit into these categories, Dr. Moran may approve projects for a stipend that may fall between $2000-$4000.

More information will be available in Fall 2025.

ASCCC OERI: Fall 2025 Webinars Coming

    • Faculty librarian Lindsay Davis, the ASCCC OERI liaison for MCCD, shares the general webinars with all of the full-time and part-time faculty.
    • Lindsay sends discipline-specific information directly to faculty who teach in the discipline or to the designated faculty lead for larger departments
  • All webinars are recorded and archived on the ASCCC OERI website.
