Getting Textbooks to Zero Student Cost: ZTC and OER

This resource is a library of video demonstrations and explanations by musicians from various global traditions, including Indigenous pow wow music and fiddling from Canada (Ontario), Cuban drumming and urban music, the mbira of the Shona of Zimbabwe, Balinese gamelan (Indonesia), classical music from North and South India, Persian classical music, and the maqam of West Asia and North Africa.

Music is a mobile art. When people move to faraway places, whether by choice or by force, they bring their music along. Music creates a meaningful point of contact for individuals and for groups; it can encourage curiosity and foster understanding; and it can preserve a sense of identity and comfort in an unfamiliar or hostile environment.

This volume is written by two collegiate music teacher educators who have met with numerous prospective music students and answered thousands of questions. They have seen students enter institutions as excited music majors only to be blindsided by the demands of the program of study. Throughout the book, the authors share advice collected from music majors, music education majors, current music teachers, and music teacher educators.

Responding to a turn in sound studies that centers the role of listening, this volume considers the co-constitutive nature of listening through a collection of essays and activities that prompt us to notice and listen more deeply.

People and Music: An Appreciation and History serves as an introduction to the history of Western art music from the Middle Ages through today: trends, innovations, people, and worthwhile music examples. It also includes samples of music from around the world and popular music and discusses how they have impacted Western art music. While it would be beyond the scope of this text to include every outstanding composer and music example throughout history, the author hopes students are inspired to further explore eras, styles, and musicians they find particularly interesting.
