LRNR 30: Information Concepts and Research Skills: Newspapers and Newsites

General research guide for LRNR 30 class

Local News

Why News Sources?

Newspapers and new sites are valuable sources of local news and events.  Many local events may not be published in national or international newspapers.

  • Refine by date of event: are you looking for current or historical information?
  • Legislative and democratic reporting for local, national government and judiciary rulings.
  • Evaluate news sources based upon ethical standards of reporting and factual coverage.

English Language Local News Websites

Local New sites often limit your access after a few articles unless you subscribe.  Using one of our databases will provide access to almost all of the articles found on these websites.

Many of these news sites provide exact copies (facsimiles) of the printed paper.  Often, there is an archive.  Most archived newspapers do not go back online beyond 1986 when digitization began.  You can often find microfilm and paper copies of older newspapers at the main library in each county.

The Merced SunStar, Modesto Bee, Sacramento Bee and Fresno Bee are owned by The McClatchy Company based in Sacramento.

The Lodi News Central is owned by Central Valley News-Sentinel, Inc based in Lodi, led by Steve Malkowich.

The Stockton Record is owned by Gannett Co., Inc, an American mass media holding company headquartered in McLean, VA.
