Anti-Racism & Equity Resources: Anti-Racism

An introduction to resources about anti-racism and racism.

About the Anti-Racism & Equity Guide

This guide provides basic information and resources about anti-racism and racism. It should not be interpreted as an exhaustive list. Reading lists are also "not a panacea" (Cooke, 2020).

This guide was adapted from the Anti-Oppression Guide with the permission of Stacy Collins of Simmons University Library. Thanks to all of the Library and Information Science (LIS) workers, scholars, and students working to dismantle white supremacy in libraries. Your anti-racism and equity work helps us critique library collections and library hiring, teaching, and lending practices.

Anti-Racism 101

"Anti-racism is defined as the work of actively opposing racism by advocating for changes in political, economic, and social life" (Racial Equity Tools).

The Difference Between Being Not Racist and Anti-Racist

"There is no such thing as being not racist says author and historian Ibram X. Kendi. In this vital conversation, he defines the transformative concept of antiracism to help us more clearly recognize, take responsibility for and reject prejudices in our public policies, workplaces and personal beliefs. Learn how you can actively use this awareness to uproot injustice and inequality in the world -- and replace it with love" (TED, 51:06).

In "The Anti-Racist Reading List" (The Atlantic), Dr. Ibram Kendi recommends a scaffolded approach to an anti-racist reading journey:

  • Begin by "developing clarity and direction that can only come from definitions."
  • "Once definitions and feelings are clear, it may be prudent to be carefully led into racism and anti-racism through political memoirs of the past...and then of the present."
  • "From memoirs, proceed to essays."
  • "From the essays, move to the nonfiction monographs."
  • "From each book, move to a lifetime of anti-racist action."
