Getting Started with Artstor Digital Library: Help your Students use Artstor

Artstor’s support team receives many questions from students who have been instructed to use Artstor for a class, but cannot figure out how to access or use the resource. Help your students by getting ahead of some of their most frequently asked questions:

  • Registering for an account
  • Downloading images for papers
  • Citing images
  • Creating presentations using Artstor’s PowerPoint download tool

Register for an account

Share this video with students to show them how to register for an account. They will need an account in order to download images for PowerPoints and other class assignments and projects.

Citing Artstor images in Papers

Students can use Artstor to create instant citations in APA, MLA, and Chicago styles.

To cite an image, open the image, then click "Generate Citation." This will open a window with several citation options you may copy and paste into your bibliography.

Artstor also works with Zotero, a popular citation manager for Firefox.

Downloading images

Students are often confused about why they can't download images from Artstor. Typically, this is because they haven't created a registered user account, which gives them the ability to do so. Help your students download images for papers by ensuring they sign up for a registered account using their preferred email address during class. Once they have created an account, they can sign in, open the image they want to download, and click the "download" button."

Study using Artstor

The fullscreen image viewer in Artstor includes a flashcard feature that students can use to study for exams. You might consider sharing the URLs to your classroom presentations with your students so they may use the flashcard feature to study. The flashcard feature works in a browser and on mobile.

To use the flashcard feature, first open the image group you would like to study. View the first image in fullscreen mode, then click the grayed "Quiz Mode Off" icon in the lower left corner. This will turn quiz mode on, and the button text will become black when it is selected. This hides the image caption.

On the lower left, click "show caption" if you are unsure of the title, date, or creator of the work as you study.

On the lower right, you may also select "shuffle" to shuffle your flashcards and change their order.
