Tutorials

Finding Encyclopedias / Reference Entries

There are a few ways you can search for reference information in OneSearch. Either of the following methods work, but each may yield slightly different results.

Method 1

  • Add your topic and the word encyclopedia in the search box
  • Run your search by clicking on the magnifying glass icon or clicking on the enter/return key on your computer keyboard
  • Restrict to Books under the Resource Type filter on the left
  • For electronic content, restrict to Available Online under the Availability limiter on the left
  • For print content, restrict to Held by library under the Availability limiter on the left

Method 2

  • Enter your topic in the search box
  • Run your search by clicking on the magnifying glass icon or clicking on the enter/return key on your computer keyboard
  • Narrow your search results by clicking on Reference entries under the Resource Type filter on the left
  • Results are typically from online content

Finding Books/eBooks

Because encyclopedias are books, the following method may also yield encyclopedias in your search results.

  • Enter your topic into the search box
  • Restrict to Books under the Resource Type filter on the left
  • For electronic content, restrict to Available Online under the Availability limiter on the left
  • For print content, restrict to Held by library under the Availability limiter on the left

Interesting eBooks

  • All of the following are eBooks from the Merced College Library.
  • Simply log into the Portal with your username and password when prompted.
  • All library database URLs and permalinks are changing between Oct-Nov 2023, so the links to these books will need to be adjusted.
  • If a title you're interested in will not load/open, despite entering your credentials, copy/paste the title into OneSearch to track down the book and its correct URL/permalink.
