  • Essay 1: Explicate a poem by TS Eliot, Audre Lorde, Claude McKay, Louise Gluck, William Wordsworth, or William Blake. There is no research component for this paper, but biographical and critical analysis materials may be helpful for brainstorming.
  • Essay 2: Compare / contrast Lorraine Hansberry's "A Raisin in the Sun" and Henrik Ibsen's "A Doll's House." You will need critical essays related to each play, especially those that use a Marxist, feminist, anti-racist, or gender studies lens.
  • Essay 3: Compare / contrast several different critical perspectives of Joseph Conrad's The Heart of Darkness. You will need critical essays related to the novella, especially from a postcolonial perspective.

Literary Criticism

For the essays you will be writing in your class, you will want to use literary criticism, which are studies that "define, classify, analyze, interpret, and evaluate works of literature...or an author's writings as a whole" (Elihu Burritt Library).

You can find literary criticism in:

  • journal articles
  • books

This guide points to search tools that can help you find literary criticism.
