MLA Style

MLA style is usually used in English and the humanities. MLA stands for the Modern Language Association.

Why, When, & How to Cite Information

Why Cite?

  • To give credit to others for their ideas
  • To provide support for your argument
  • To help your reader find and read the sources you used

When to Cite

  • Paraphrasing, summarizing, or directly quoting from any source
  • Acknowleding another person for an idea
  • Using your own previous work

How to Cite

MLA citation requires two parts:

  1. In-Text Citations - brief citations included within the text of your paper. They point your reader to the full citation at the end of your paper.
  2. Work Cited Page - a page at the end of your paper listing all the sources you used.

Database Provider vs. Database Name

When citing information, you need to provide the name of the database vs. the database brand name.

  • EBSCOhost = database provider
    • Academic Search Complete = database name
    • PsycINFO = database name
  • Gale = database provider
    • Gale Virtual Reference Library = database name
    • Academic OneFile = database name

You can also try to use free online tools to help you create citations in a variety of formats, including MLA, however, all online citation tools, including those available in the library databases, are not completely accurate. You will have to make make edits to ensure your citations are in the proper format.
