Fundamentals of Speech

Overview

Why Cite?

  • To give credit to others for their ideas
  • To provide support for your argument
  • To help your reader find and read the sources you used

When to Cite

  • Paraphrasing, summarizing, or directly quoting from any source
  • Acknowledging another person for an idea
  • Using your own previous work

How to Cite

APA citation requires two parts:

  • In-Text Citations: brief citations included within the text of your paper. They point your reader to the full citation at the end of your paper.
  • References List: a page at the end of your paper listing all the sources you used.

APA 7th Ed. Manual

The APA Publication Manual is the official guide to APA format.

Free Microsoft 365 Access

Tutorials and Workshop Recording

This interactive tutorial was created by Merced College Faculty Librarian Lindsay Davis and will guide you through:

  • formatting a paper
  • creating in-text citations
  • pulling information from sources to create citations for a References page in APA 7th edition

The tutorial can be used as an assignment because there are quiz questions. Students can retake it as often as they wish, and after completing the tutorial, they can download a PDF certificate of completion with their name and score as a percentage.

    • Don't use a period after a DOI.
  • Use the URL for websites as long as it will work for your audience.
