Integrating Intersectionality into Library Instruction & Programming: Finding Books

Presented at Library Instruction West 2018, Colorado Mesa University, Grand Junction, Colorado

For LIW 2018 Attendees

In other Writing 10 courses, I rarely cover the library catalog on its own. I usually include it in a list of general search tools that are helpful when getting started, but, in this class, books are helpful for many of the students' topics.

What are books good for?

"Books can include comprehensive accounts of research or scholarship, historical data, overviews, [o]r experts' views on a theme or topic. Use a book when you require background information and related research on a topic, when you want to add depth to a research topic or put your topic in context with other important issues." (CQ University Library, "Evaluating Books, Journals, Journal Articles and Websites")

Activity

Please fill out your assigned row on the Google Sheet.

  • In Column D, link the permalink of a book record from Melvyl that may be relevant for your topic.
  • In Column E, make a note about what seems helpful about the book.

How do I use Melvyl?

Use Melvyl as a search tool to access print books and eBooks, as well as articles and other materials.

Melvyl

Overview & Example

Melvyl is the library catalog, a database, which you can use to find eBooks, print books, and more.

Here is a book I found in Mevyl that could be potentially helpful for my investigation of the black power movement and black women: Patricia Hill Collins' From Black Power to Hip-Hop: Racisim, Nationalism, and Feminism (2006).
