Potential topics are as follows:
  • The Bell Jar is a novel about Esther's depression. • The Bell Jar is a novel about Esther's depression. In an essay, answer the question: with what mental illness would you diagnose Esther ? Use psychological analysis to give a potential mental disease or disorder and a suggested plan for effective treatment. Note: this is not examining Esther as someone with no real mental issue. You are strictly labeling a specific medical issue and addressing what should be done to aid Esther medically.
  • The Bell Jar is a novel about Esther's experiences with psychiatric treatment. In an essay, answer the questions: is Esther's treatment effective? Why or why not? How or how not? What does the novel ultimately want us to think about how Esther was treated by her doctors and hospitals?
  • Compare Esther and either the narrator of "The Yellow Wallpaper " or Emily, in "A Rose for Emily":  what are the messages these texts are giving regarding women and mental health and mental health treatment for women.  This is basically examining the themes of the texts and what those themes have in common.
  • Frankenstein is about the creation of a monster. In an essay, analyze the text to answer the question: what does this book say about humanity, and what it means to be human?  Who is/are the real monster(s) in the story, and why?
  • Frankenstein is a novel that poses an ethical question of how far science should be taken in the pursuit of conquering nature. What does the story say about Dr. Frankenstein's experiment and his motivation?  Is this a warning, a cautionary tale about man's self destruction by its own genius?
