Merced College library provides FREE access to the news platform The New York Times, considered America's "newspaper of record". Additionally, Merced College has microfilm access to archival New York Times starting from 1854 through 2009. Talk to a faculty librarian at the Research Help desk to find out more about microfilm use.

Access includes:

  • Breaking news and headlines, opinions, business, audio and video, obituaries, arts, lifestyle, sports and more.
  • Download the NYT app on your personal device through Apple Store or Google Play 
  • NYT TimesMachine archive of thousands of primary source documents
  • Wordle, games, podcasts, and more.

Once you have created your account you have one year access to extensive breaking news, world news, and multimedia of the New York Times.

  • Get started by typing accessnyt.com into your browser (i.e., Chrome, Firefox, etc.)
  • Find and select your institution from the drop down menu: Merced College
  • Select your location from the options: on-campus or off-campus
  • Use your Merced College student or staff email address to create the account: your personal email will not activate an account
  • Watch the video through the end and download the NYT app on your personal device.

  • The New York Times requires a paid subscription for full access to its website. Unsubscribed visitors may only read up to 3 free articles per month. NYT Account Pass gives readers unlimited access to all content on the site, except for a limited number of articles you can view from 1923 to 1980.
  • Accessing the New York times from off-campus is easy, but Merced College Librarians are here to help! Submit a Report a Problem form, making sure to include the URL and your contact information, and librarians will contact you within 24 hours during the work week.
